OSI Layer Seven - Application Layer

the Application Layer is the layer that provides a series of definitions that are used to provide network-wide systems management functions such as software for file transfers database access and electronic mail. it is possible to extend the definition to include the application user interface as part of the functional definition. but the OSI specifications focus on common network services like performance management, mail and file transfer.

as an example of automobile highway, the application layer is the same as the dashboard of your car. the different gauges make your aware of information you need to know to say withing speed limits and maintain optimal performance for your car.
