Windows 7 USB Ports Not Working by Chacoman
first i couldn't shut it down
now the usb keyboard and my mouse is not working. i looked in device manager and the drivers are there
i think this may have to do with last night wheni closed the lid on my computer i still had a usb modem connected so not sure if that has anything to do with. maybe it got hang or something
well if i figure it out i i will post the solution here.
if you know how to fix this, please reply
thanks

Try formatting your pc. To help maintain and resolve performance issues, reformatting the hard drive on a yearly basis is advisable. It's also a good idea to take several precautions to wipe a hard drive, so that personal and private data will not be recovered. to read more about this try looking here : techyv dot com /questio

i found the solution after one week of investigation. the problem is when you are using a usb device the heat of the port is increasing so the power manager of your computer shuts down the usb by default option. so you need to go and look at your battery power manager options. when you click the detailed options you will see lots of default option just turn off the usb part of the options. so you wont have the usb mouse problem...

gene,
i just had the same problem (win7-32). came into work and none of my usb ports were working; no mouse, no keyboard. the only thing i could do was hit the power off button on my dell desktop. dead in safemode, too. however, keyboard did work during boot to check bios and all that stuff.
to fix the problem i was forced to do the following:
1. power up and repeatedly hit the f8 key
2. select the 'repair windows' option or whatever it is called when it appeared
3. try earlier and earlier system restores until i found one that worked. note that i got an error message 0x8000ffff that the system restore failed...but it still worked.
what caused the problem? i don't know. it may have been attempting to install 'guest additions' to virtualbox. it was the last thing i did before leaving. virtualbox is a wonderful program except for the installation of the guest additions. that is truely its achilles's heel. i have made the attempt on several systems and it has been so bad i don't know wha

not one of these answers takes care of the problem. read my lips: none of my usb ports are working. that includes the usb port that serves my mouse and the usb port that serves my keyboard, the usb port that serves my wifi connection. the computer runs and lights up the monitor, but is deaf and blind to all input thru a usb port. starting windows in safe mode doesn't work. the usb ports are dead, so i can't click or type or make any contact with the cpu. i have a dell dimension e510 recently converted from windows xp to windows 7. it worked fine for several weeks, then about a week ago, no usb ports functioning.

problem is that you are missing the generic usb drivers, i had this problem.
look in the inf directory and ensure the following files are listed if not copy form another windows 7 machine
usb.inf
usb.pnf
usbstor.inf
usbstor.pnf

check this question:
a user calls you with a complaint that none of his usb devices are working. what is the most probably cause?
a) usb is disabled in the bios.
b) the root hub is not configured.
c) usb is disabled in windows.
d) the usb 2.0 controller has failed
can you guess the answer?
well, if you want to know what the amswer is, its a
so check your bios, maybe its disabled there
