I forgot my root password how do i get reset super user fortgotten linux password by piwi_geek

ok, i am so dumb. i can't beleive i lost my root password and i have no idea how to get it back. is there a way to reset the super user password to login back again and retrieve it form the system so i don't have to reinstall the os and loose everything in my server.

This works for me.

Take a live distro CD - such as Debian Live:

Open a terminal window.
Code:
/mnt/hdxx (your hard drive - and your partition)

then do
Code:
chroot /mnt/hdxx

and finally run
Code:
passwd
