IMPORTANT: do this are your own risk. If you are not sure of these steps, do not atempt. Ask someone who knows more about computers. Always make a backup.

if you are like me and you have microsoft windows XP, the annoying mesesnger icon on the task bar is always there. To finally get rid of it and remove it once and for all, you can follow these simple step by step tutorial guide on how to remove this anoying program from your computer. I found out how to do this after i had uninstal it though "add / remove programs" in the control panel but it keeps coming back. removing it through "add / remove programs" doesn't work. i kept trying until i had to do it manually by follow these steps:

1. Click on the start button, and select "Run"

2. A small window appears, in the text area, type: C:WINDOWSINFSYSOC.INF and click OK (if you are asked to choose a program to which to open the SYSOC.INF file, select notepad. notepad can be found in C:WINDOWSsystem32notepad.exe)

3. After you have opened the sysoc.inf file with notepad, look (control + f) for the line where it says: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 and delete it, then save the sysoc.inf file (control-s)

4. now go back to the add/remove programs (start > control panel > add/remove programs

6. Now scroll down until you see the "Windows Messenger" icon and uncheck the check box to remove it and click "Next"

7. now reboot / restart your computer.

you cant because you dont have administrative permissions. specially if you are using a school computer. you need to be a member of administrator to install or remove any programs.

Sarah's Windows Tweak: Uninstall Hidden WinXP Programs
written by Sarah Lane on Thursday, October 02, 2003

Add/Remove hidden programs in Windows XP and 2000.
We all want to uninstall everything Windows doesn't completely need to run optimally. Problem is, some programs you don't want taking up space hide away. They're next to impossible to find, much less remove.

Don't worry, because tonight I have a Windows tweak that'll help you immediately. Yes, we showed you how to do it back in November 2001, but my gut and my inbox tell me I should mention it again.

1. Navigate to C:WINDOWSinf

2. Open the sysoc.inf file in Notepad or another plain text editor. If you can't find the inf directory, it's probably hidden. Unhide it.
1. Click Tools and choose Folder Options.
2. Under View, enable Show Hidden Files & Folders.

3. In sysoc.inf, look for the section called "components" in XP or "old base components" in 2000. What looks like a bunch of gibberish is actually pretty easy to read. You'll see a component name, followed by an equals sign, followed by a list of parameters separated by commas.

For example: Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,HIDE,7

4. The deal: the "HIDE" between the two last commas indicates a hidden component. Remove "HIDE" to unhide the component.

For example: Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7

5. Unhide any component you want.

6. Save the file.

7. Reopen the Windows Component Wizard to see your new Add/Remove options!

Let's see if you can remove Windows Messenger forever. I know you can.

Love and kisses,
Sarah
