How To Check If Server Supports .htaccess by Braco

when i signed up for web hosting, i thought that i would have access to .htaccess controls, i am installing a scrpt for a gallery and when i try to run it its giving me an error, the software maker says that i need .htaccess support. but i have not idea what that is so they told me to come to my web hosting company. can you show me how to check if my sserver supports .htaccess
