there is your problem, you cant do that, you need to have the same type of DIMM. you either will have to change your memory to 512MB + 512MB or 1GB + 1GB.
the reason why are getting this error in your linux server its because there is a hardware problems, and since you changed the memory, there is your problem.

yes, i upgraded my memory. the server had two 512MB of memory so i removed them and install a 1GB DIMM on the second slot and removed the 512MB, no now i have two DIMMs, one is 512MB and the other is 1GB so total is 1.5GB.
