depens on how you login..
do you login through an .htaccess file or trough web interface?
if you are using .htacces you are getting a popup window like my picture here if you are not successful, you will get an errror like this:
Welcome to phpMyAdmin 2.6.4-pl3
Wrong username/password. Access denied.
